I am a Junior at Anoka High School in Minnestota, USA.  Inclosed is the requested information that you have sent to all of the History Teachers. There are four books that I have found information about the requested material. I hope this is what you are looking for, unfourtently there is not a lot of information about famous people in Flanders.  Enjoy looking through the material. If there are any questions please e-mail me back.

Thank you.

In regards to your research:

Mercator is the only person from your list that appears in our 7th grade text "Why We Remember."

Have a good day.

My name Chris Bisanz. I teach 8th grade world geography in Wayzata, Minnesota. I am responding to your request about how much I discuss the Flemish in our text books and in the classroom. The only thing we talk about is Mercator. There isn't much in the text on him or his background. The book just talks about the map projection. I hope this helps you. Sincerely, Chris Bisanz

Greetings.

I am a high school Social Studies teacher in St. Paul, Minnesota. We read your email concerning your Flanders history project and my Western Civilization class took some time to do research on the subject. Your project sounded very interesting to the students as they often wonder what other countries teach their students about American history or even if they should teach American history at all.

After looking though our textbook we were very disappointed with the results. The only name, from the list you provided us, that appeared in out textbook was that of Pieter Paul Rubens.

The text we are using is called The Western Heritage, sixth edition by Donald Kagan, Steven Ozment and Frank Turner. This is an older book, but is still one of the most common college texts used. I must apologize for not sending a scanned image of the text, but out scanner was not availble at the time. The page from the book was 417 and the section containing Ruben's was as follows, "Great baroque artists like Peter Paul Rubens (1571-1640) and Gianlorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) were Catholics".

Speaking only for my own class, I would say that most of these people are dealt with only in passing. There is very little time devoted to any one particular region of Europe as most classes seem to take a broad overview survey approach to history.

I hope this helps your project and good luck.
