In Swedish history former Belgian families are prominent through their works and enterprises in general within early industry, particularly in foundries. Walloon families were invited to Sweden to develop the metals industries, articularly the iron industry.

Greetings from Umeå, Sweden!

I have to aplogise for being so tardy in answering your request. I have not yet found the time to scan the history pages you requested and I sincerely doubt I will find any time either, but I can at least tell you which books we use and which Flemish famous persons they tell the reader about.

Our Swedish history textbook (Bergström, Börje et al., "Alla tiders historia A", published by Gleerups) does not mention any of the Flemish persons you asked for (not even Mercator, which surprised me).

Our American textbook (Krieger, Larry S. et al. "World History - Perspectives on the Past", 5th edition, DC Heath and Company/McDougal Littel, 1997) that we use in our bilingual education, mentions some of the persons: Jan van Eyck (including a picture of his painting "Wedding Portrait") Pieter Bruegel, Andreas Vesalius.

This book didn't mention Mercator either, but then he might be mentioned in geography books rather than history books...

Yours sincerely, Lena Tegström Dragonskolan Umeå Sweden

Hello!

I´m a History Teacher of the Scandinavian School of Brussels. In the book we use for the Swedish speaking students (we also use an English one for all the nationalities), "Nya Alla Tiders Historia", Bergström, Löwgren, Almgren, I only found short entries on Pieter Breughel de Oudere, Pieter Paul Rubens and Jan Van Eyck. All these entries were only one sentence and used in connection with paintings shown in the book.

Yours - Erik
