Hi My name is Alwyn du Preez, Principal of a school for learners with learning barriers, viz. Arcadia School
The school is situated in East London, a city in the Eastern Cape Province in the Republic of South Africa, The history taught in primary Schools in the RSA is mainly of national content plus some general history pertaining to the discovery of the sea route from Europe to the East, i.e Hendrik de Seevaarder, Bartholomeus Dias, Vasco Da Gama and Jan van Riebeeck, a little bit of the discovery of the Americas, but nothing that I can say about Flanders. What I or most of the run of the mill South African know about your country is the glimps we get when your cyclists visit the RSA to participate in events like the Rapport Tour. We know about Eddie Merckx as one of the greatest cyclists ever and marvel at how closely the Flemish language and my language, Afrikaans, resemble each other, en daarom gesels ek nou liewer verder in Afrikaans want ek weet dat julle dit maklik sal kan begryp ( verstaan ).Ek het toe ek Geskiedenis op Universiteit bestudeer het wel van jul geskiedkundige persone wat julle in hierdie e-pos noem te lese gekry maar ek is jammer om te sê dat dit maar enkele van die persone was. Wat is die doel van julle navorsing? Is dit om jul land en sy geskiedenis wyer bekend te stel? Indien wel wnes ek julle alle sterkte toe want nasie weet so min van mekaar af . Tree gerus weer met my in verbinding.

NS Afstammeling van die Franse Hugenote ( Protestantse Christelike) geloofwat in 1688 hul, na bloedige vervolging in die noorde van Frankryk, in die Kaap de Goede Hoop hier aan die suidpunt van Afrika kom vestig het. Die Franse Hugenote en die Hollandse Setlaars het ondertrou en uiteindelik die Afrikaanse taal ontwikkel. Dit is 'n samevloeiing van Nederlands en Vlaams en ons is n baie trotse nasie wat baie lief is vir ons taal en kultuur en vas staan in ons Calvinistiese geloof. Ons misken egter nie ander gelowe en nasies of rasse nie en strewe om in vrede saam te lewe. Skryf graag weer aan my om verder gedagtes te wissel.

The only person who would get any mention at Primary School, and I suggest High School as well, would be Mercator. He would be mentioned concerning maps but would not be studied. I have never heard of the others.

Dear Lieven
My sister received this message from you at her school and passed it onto me. I have been teaching history and writing textbooks for many years. I'm afraid that Belgium does not feature much, unless in the context of the European Renaissance and Reformation - but in the new history that we are trying to implement since the 1994 democratic elections were are trying to get more emphasis on Africa into our curriculum and less on Europe as we had Eurocentric stuff forced down our throats under apartheid. There was also an overemphasis on white men and very little on social and economic history.

Hi !
I asked the history teacher, she says that none of the persons on your list covered in our history courses, but James Ensor and Pieter P Rubens are mentioned in our Art classes, and in geography Mercator in mentioned in cartography

I am a high school teacher in Somerset West, a small town on the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa. I passed this email message to our History teacher. According to him, not one of those names appear in the history books.
As a Geography teacher, I know about Mercator projections of maps of the world, and as a cyclist I am familiar with Eddy Merckx.
In the university town of Stellenbosch, there is a group of actors who call themselves the Breughel Group. They enact the prescribed stories for the Matric (Grade 12) learners at schools. Unfortunately I could not get hold of them to find out who the group has been named after.
