He discovered the straights between Palmerpeninsula and the Palmerarchipel in 1899. He was also the one who proved the existence of a big Antartic continent. Gerlache took his expedition with the Belgica, the first truly scientific Antarctic expedition, to the Pacific Ocean side of the Antarctic Peninsula, became caught in the ice, and spent the winter of 1897-1898 there.
