Jan van Eyck may be considered as history’s most important renewer of the art of painting. Van Eyck ushered in an new era in the Low Countries in the 15th century: ‘de Vlaamse Primitieven’. This period is characterized by a naturalistic style of vivid oil colours, meticulous detail, accurately rendered textures, and the illusion of three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface. Van Eyck’s perspective wasn’t scientifically correct but he succeeded in creating depth in a convincing way.
