Father Damian was a Flemish missionary who left on 2 November 1863 for the Hawai-isles. There he became ordained priest. After eight years of work in Kohala, he asked to be transferred to the lepra isle Molokai. He reorganized the neglected community and improved material and hygienic conditions of life. He was also stricken by the disease and died of it in 1889. In 1995 Father Damian was blessed by the Pope.
